How To Improve Productivity

April 06, 2021 5 min read

If you feel there's not enough time in the day, and you're drained and fatigued while working, you may be looking for tips on how to improve productivity.

There are many different strategies and productivity techniques out there, but we've picked out and narrowed it down to just eight.

So if you're looking for ways to increase productivity, whether you work at an office or run a business from home, read on to learn more about how you can improve your productivity.

#1 - Make Lists

It's a proven fact: lists help you manage your time better, prioritize tasks, set goals and deadlines, and be more organized. So make a list of everything you want to accomplish, every morning. Start on the next day's task list with 2 or 3 items before going to bed.

Most people end up making more than one list, which is perfectly fine. (After all, no one can remember everything!) You can make one right at your desk at the company you work for (or at your home office), or anywhere else you like. Include your daily goals, and be sure to prioritize by putting the more important tasks at the top. Then do your most important tasks first.

#2 - One Thing At A Time

One of the most important things to remember in time management is focus. Do the highest priority and most dreaded things first, and more importantly, focus on one task at a time.

Focus on completing the task until it's done, and check it off. By setting daily goals and putting your concentration into one task at any given time, you will automatically increase your productivity for everything else.

#3 - Breaks

Take short breaks throughout the day to avoid losing your focus and decision fatigue. Taking short breaks every so often or in between tasks actually has been proven to improve productivity in a business workplace, by keeping employees refreshed and their minds sharp.

#4 - Restrict Calls And Social Media

In business, many companies will restrict the number of phone calls you can make that are personal. Be sure you turn off your app and email notifications while you're working at your desk. Never check your personal emails at work. You're also going to have to restrict your access to social media while at work, and any other personal distractions.

Remember: focus. The important thing here is to gain some time, which will, in turn, improve your productivity. Social media is a type of personal distraction you cannot afford, so wait until you break for lunch or after work to check things like your social media platforms and email.

#5 - 2-Minute Rule

Of all the methods to improve productivity, the 2-minute rule is probably one of the most common. Following this rule is advised in helping you create new habits that will improve your productivity.

The advice for the 2-minute rule is to first go back to your list of tasks. After the urgent tasks, is there anything that can be completed in 2 minutes? If so, complete the task now and cross it off your list.

The idea then is to utilize this strategy to create positive new routines that will help you become a more productive person.

This can be achieved by setting a goal of doing 2 minutes of the new habit you want to adopt each day.

The way it works is if you want to find time to read a book, start by making it one of your tasks, and read one page or 2 minutes worth every night. Or, if you want to start exercising every morning before work, start by preparing for your workout, or doing 2 minutes worth, every morning.

Once you actually start this new habit, you're on the road to continuing it. Believe it or not, you have the ability to accomplish your tasks, get what you want, and see things in a new way!

#6 - Music Therapy

Take the time to listen to some music in the background. Listening to certain types of music has been proven to boost productivity and increase cognitive function, as well as relieve stress and improve your mood.

There has been a myriad of studies done on the best kinds of music to listen to, but music that has 50 to 80 beats per minute is ideal. Some of the top kinds listed are classical, nature sounds, or movie soundtracks.

#7 - Get Enough Sleep

Get your body and brain healthier by getting enough sleep. Case studies have shown that a person who gets less than 6 hours of sleep per night, or otherwise suffers from sleep deprivation, has significantly decreased productivity.

Over a third of all Americans don't get enough sleep. A good night's sleep is vital to healthy brain function and can affect mental health issues, as well as concentration, learning, focus, emotions, and attention.

Did you know well over 40 million people in the United States alone have trouble sleeping? That can lead to restless days and even lower productivity.
